This may have been the coolest place I painted along this drive. If it weren't for the cloudy weather, I would've painted here all day.
These Wigwam motels were initially a chain that started in the 30's and 40's. There were 7 total, 3 remain today. They are in Cave City, KY, San Bernardino, CA and "#6" here in Holbrook, AZ. This particular village was built in 1950 by a fella named Chester E. Lewis, who bought the rights to the wigwam design and the name from the original developer, Frank A. Redford. Lewis' family still own and operate the place today.
There were too many cool cars to choose from to paint here. I went with this Chevy pickup mainly because it was raining, and it happened to be parked under the front roof, where there used to be gas pumps. I also wanted to include the cool "office" sign.
Like I said, it was cloudy and rainy that day, so I passed some time with a delicious (and very generously portioned) breakfast from Romo's down the street, then headed out for Joseph City.
